I began my career at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) as a technical writing intern in 2009 while finishing my master’s degree. From there, I was offered a full-time position on the CERT writing team. Within a year, I was promoted into a rotating position as Senior Writer for the Director’s Office (DO).
As the primary communications support for the C-suite, I created content for technical audiences, managed organization-wide projects, and assisted with an internal rebrand. My biggest challenge, and in some ways favorite aspect of the role, was communicating highly technical content in an engaging and accessible way.
During this time, the internal Organizational Effectiveness Group (OEG) tapped me to create content and roll out a new onboarding program, assist with the organization’s largest project showcase, and help further their mission through other tasks. On this team, I was able to expand my reach and understand the needs of the SEI on a deeper level.
After my time in the DO, I was sent to a newly formed startup within the organization to develop a comprehensive communications strategy. While in this role, I was still frequently called on to assist with projects and events for the C-suite.
Balancing these positions, I realized I enjoyed the fast-paced startup life and exploring different communication styles. That’s when I began looking for new challenges, and I started applying to companies in different countries.
